Gears of War: E-Day arrives on Tuesday 6 October for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and on day one with Game Pass. It is a prequel set fourteen years before the first game, on the day the Locust Horde first broke through the ground of Sera, and it follows a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. A new Gears is the right moment for the oldest argument on Xbox: is Gears of War greater than Halo: Combat Evolved? GOATvs asks everyone to pick one, and the box above shows how the world splits today.

Halo came first. Bungie's shooter launched with the original Xbox in November 2001 and gave the console its identity. It proved that a first-person shooter could feel right on a controller, it introduced Master Chief and the ring world, and its two-weapon limit, recharging shield and vehicles became habits for a whole genre. Split-screen and LAN parties built around Halo are the reason many people bought an Xbox at all.

Gears of War answered five years later, in November 2006 on the Xbox 360. Epic Games made the cover system the centre of the game: you move from wall to wall, pop out, shoot and duck back. The Lancer rifle with its chainsaw bayonet, the active reload and the grey, broken cities of Sera made it look like nothing else on the console, and the first trailer, set to "Mad World", is still one of the best-known game adverts. Microsoft later bought the series, and The Coalition, the studio behind E-Day, has made every main game since Gears of War 4.

So the vote is really about two kinds of shooter. Halo is wide open: big spaces, vehicles, a calm hero in a helmet and a story about an ancient alien ring. Gears is close and heavy: a squad behind cover, a war fought street by street, and a more personal story about Marcus and Dom. Picking Halo means picking the game that started Xbox; picking Gears means picking the one that showed what the next console could do.

Both series have more than one contender. Halo 3 closed Master Chief's first trilogy in 2007 and filled Xbox Live for years, and Gears of War 2 in 2008 made everything bigger, including Horde mode, which many players still call the best part of the series. Fans of either side can also check where the others stand in the best shooter games list.

E-Day will add a new name to the series, and real votes decide where the classics stay. Pick Gears of War or Halo above, then try Halo 3 against Gears of War 2, the sequels that fought for the same Xbox 360 owners in back-to-back years.

Vote: Halo: Combat Evolved vs Gears of War
