Messi vs Ronaldo: who is the greatest footballer of all time?

The world's places and splits, from everyone's votes. They move as the votes come in.

For almost two decades one question has split football fans more than any other: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? They arrived at the top within a few years of each other, shared the Ballon d'Or between them for a decade, and kept breaking records long after most players retire. There is no referee for this argument, so GOATvs asks everyone, one pick at a time, and the box above shows how the world splits today.

Start with the individual awards, because that is where the gap is widest. Messi has won the Ballon d'Or eight times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023), more than any other player. Ronaldo has won it five times (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017). For several of those years the vote was effectively a two-man race, which is part of why the rivalry felt so personal.

Then the Champions League, where the picture flips. Ronaldo won it five times, once with Manchester United and four times with Real Madrid, and he is the competition's all-time top scorer. Messi collected four winner's medals with Barcelona. Ronaldo also holds the record for the most goals in men's international football, and in 2024 he became the first player credited with 900 official career goals.

Messi's strongest argument came late. With Argentina he won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024 and, in between, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he scored twice in the final against France and was named the tournament's best player, as he had been in 2014. For many fans that night settled the debate; for others it simply added the one trophy Messi had been missing. Ronaldo's Portugal won Euro 2016, the country's first major title, and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

The styles are as different as the trophy cabinets. Messi is a creator as much as a finisher: low centre of gravity, close control, and as many assists as highlight-reel dribbles. His 91 goals in the calendar year 2012 are still a Guinness world record. Ronaldo rebuilt himself several times, from a winger with step-overs at Manchester United to the most relentless penalty-box scorer of his generation, strong in the air and with either foot, and he has scored in leagues in Portugal, England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia.

Longevity is the other half of the case. Messi spent 17 seasons in Barcelona's first team and became the club's all-time top scorer before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and Inter Miami in 2023. Ronaldo, two years older, joined Al Nassr in 2023 and kept scoring after his 40th birthday in 2025. Few players at any level have stayed this good for this long.

Of course the greatest-of-all-time question did not begin with these two. Pelé remains the only player to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), and Diego Maradona carried Argentina to the 1986 title, including the quarter-final against England with both the 'Hand of God' and the goal later voted the Goal of the Century. Older fans often rank them first, and the pair of them is its own face-off on GOATvs.

So who is better? Statistics can be read either way: Ronaldo leads in Champions League titles and international goals, Messi in Ballon d'Ors and, since 2022, in World Cups. The fair answer is that it depends on what you value, and the most honest way to settle it is to count opinions. Vote on Messi vs Ronaldo, then see how the rest of the greatest footballers of all time and the greatest forwards are ranked by everyone.
