Michael Jordan vs LeBron James: who is the basketball GOAT?

On GOATvs right now

A new NBA season starts this month, and with it comes the argument that never really ends: is Michael Jordan or LeBron James the greatest basketball player of all time? Barbers, sports radio and group chats have been at it for close to twenty years. GOATvs asks the question the simplest way possible, one name against the other, and the box above shows how the world splits right now.

The case for Jordan starts with the rings. He won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, three in a row from 1991 to 1993 and three more from 1996 to 1998, and he was named Finals MVP every single time. He never lost in the Finals and never needed a game seven to win one. Along the way he collected five regular-season MVP awards, ten scoring titles and a Defensive Player of the Year award in 1988, and he retired with the highest scoring average in league history, just above 30 points a game.

Jordan also changed what a basketball player could be off the court. The Air Jordan shoe, the 1992 Olympic Dream Team in Barcelona and Space Jam made him one of the most famous people on the planet, not only in the United States. The 2020 documentary series The Last Dance introduced his final Bulls season to a generation too young to have seen it, and reminded everyone how fiercely he competed.

The case for LeBron is about how much and for how long. He arrived in the NBA straight from high school in 2003, picked first by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and has stayed at the top for over two decades. He won four championships with three different teams: Miami in 2012 and 2013, Cleveland in 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, with a Finals MVP each time. He also won four regular-season MVP awards. In February 2023 he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the league's all-time leading scorer, and a year later he became the first player to reach 40,000 points.

LeBron's defenders also point to 2016. His Cavaliers were down three games to one in the Finals against a Golden State team that had just set a record for regular-season wins, and they came back to win, ending Cleveland's long wait for a major sports title. His Finals record is four wins and six defeats, which critics use against him, but supporters reply that reaching ten Finals is itself something almost nobody has done.

So the vote comes down to what you value. Jordan's peak is the purest in the sport: dominant, unbeaten when it mattered and unforgettable to watch. LeBron's career is the most complete: passing, scoring, rebounding and staying elite at an age when most players have long retired. People who saw the Bulls of the 1990s often pick Jordan; many who grew up with LeBron pick him. Olympic gold counts for both, two for Jordan and three for LeBron.

The conversation does not stop at two names. Kobe Bryant won five titles with the Lakers and scored 81 points in a single game in 2006. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for regular-season MVP awards with six. Stephen Curry changed how the game is played with the three-point shot and won four titles with Golden State.
