Atlético vs Bayern: Thomas Müller or Antoine Griezmann, who is greater?

Atlético Madrid host Bayern Munich on Tuesday 3 November, on the fourth night of the Champions League league phase. It is a meeting with a long history: Bayern won the 1974 European Cup final against Atlético after a replay, and Atlético knocked Bayern out of the 2016 semi-finals on away goals. So instead of guessing the score, we asked a different question. Across the two clubs' great players, who does the world think is greater? The box above shows how the votes split today.

The closest call is between two forwards who were never quite strikers. Thomas Müller spent his whole European career at Bayern, won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup and more league titles than anyone in German history. He called himself a "Raumdeuter", an interpreter of space, and built a career on being in the right place a second before anyone else. Antoine Griezmann is the face of modern Atlético: a World Cup winner with France in 2018, the best player of that tournament's final, and the club's all-time top scorer. In 2016 it was Griezmann who scored the away goal in Munich that sent Atlético through, on a night when Müller's penalty was saved.

The present day is a striker's duel. Harry Kane moved to Bayern in 2023 and has not stopped scoring, and Julián Alvarez arrived at Atlético from Manchester City in 2024, already a World Cup winner with Argentina. Kane has the bigger body of work, and the world vote reflects that, but Alvarez is still in his twenties and the ranking is for a whole career, not for one season.

Then there is the past. Gerd Müller scored twice in the 1974 replay against Atlético and remains the measure every Bayern striker is held to. Atlético's answer is Fernando Torres, the academy boy who became their captain at 19, left to win everything with Spain, and came home to finish his career at the club he supported. And Bayern's other great number nine, Robert Lewandowski, scored goals in Munich at a rate few players in history have matched.

The world ranking of footballers is built from millions of head-to-head picks, two players at a time, and it moves every day. If you think Griezmann deserves to be above Müller, or that the gap between Kane and Alvarez is too wide, the vote is open before Tuesday's kick-off.
