The world's places and splits, from everyone's votes. They move as the votes come in.

Portugal host Norway in Porto on Sunday 4 October in the UEFA Nations League, and the match comes with a ready-made question: Cristiano Ronaldo or Erling Haaland? One is 41 and still leading the line for his country; the other is 26 and already rewriting his own country's record book. They play the same position, but they belong to different eras. GOATvs asks everyone to pick one, and the box above shows how the world splits today.

The game itself matters. Portugal and Norway share League A Group 4, and Portugal won the first meeting 2-1 in Oslo on 27 September. Under new coach Jorge Jesus, who managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, Portugal kept their captain in the squad after the World Cup. Norway will look to Martin Ødegaard to feed Haaland, as Arsenal's captain has done for his country for years. Kick-off at the Estádio do Dragão is 18:45 UTC.

Ronaldo's case rests on two decades at the very top. He won the Ballon d'Or five times, the Champions League five times (once with Manchester United, four times with Real Madrid), and he is the competition's all-time top scorer. With Portugal he won Euro 2016, the country's first major title, and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He holds the record for the most goals in men's international football, and in 2024 he became the first player credited with 900 official career goals.

Haaland's case is about how fast he got here. Born in Leeds while his father Alf-Inge was playing in England, he came through Bryne and Molde, then scored at a startling rate for Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. In his first season at Manchester City he scored 36 Premier League goals, a record for a 38-game season, and won the treble: the league, the FA Cup and the Champions League. For Norway he has already become the all-time leading scorer, and his goals took the country to its first World Cup since 1998.

So the question is really about what greatness means. Ronaldo has the trophies, the records and the longevity: he scored in leagues in Portugal, England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia and kept going long after most forwards stop. Haaland has the numbers per game and the time to add everything else. Picking Ronaldo means picking a finished career; picking Haaland means betting on one that may end up even bigger.

Portugal's own history adds a third name. Eusébio, the Benfica forward, won the Ballon d'Or in 1965 and was the top scorer of the 1966 World Cup, where Portugal reached the semi-finals. Luís Figo won the Ballon d'Or in 2000. Ronaldo against Eusébio is the oldest argument in Portuguese football, and it is one more pick on GOATvs.

Whatever happens in Porto, the vote stays open. Pick Ronaldo or Haaland above, then try the other big forward debate of this generation, Kylian Mbappé against Haaland, or see the whole Football Top 100, ranked by everyone.
