Battlefield 6 vs Black Ops 7: who won the 2025 shooter war?

A year ago the two biggest names in military shooters went head to head again. Battlefield 6 came out on 10 October 2025 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 followed on 14 November, five weeks later. It was the first autumn since 2021 that both series had a new game, and the argument over which one was better started before either was in the shops. On GOATvs that argument never closes: every game is picked or passed over one face-off at a time, by everyone, and the box above shows where the two stand in the world's list of the best video games of all time today.

Battlefield 6 was made by Battlefield Studios, the group EA put together from DICE, Criterion, Motive and Ripple Effect. After the near future of Battlefield 2042, it went back to a war set almost in the present day, between NATO and a private military company called Pax Armata, with a single-player campaign, the four classic classes (Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon) and the buildings that fall down around you that the series is known for. Later that October EA added REDSEC, a free-to-play battle royale built on the same game.

Black Ops 7 came from Treyarch and Raven Software. It is set in 2035, follows on from both Black Ops II and Black Ops 6, and brings back David Mason, with a campaign that four players can play together and the return of Zombies. As with Black Ops 6, it launched on Game Pass on day one, since Microsoft has owned Activision since 2023. Some longtime players said a second Black Ops in two years came too soon. Which of the two new games the world prefers is the first pair in the box above: Battlefield 6 vs Black Ops 7.

The two series have done this before. In the autumn of 2011 Battlefield 3 arrived at the end of October and Modern Warfare 3 two weeks later, and EA's marketing aimed straight at Call of Duty. Battlefield 3 had the bigger maps, the jets and the tanks; Modern Warfare 3 closed the story of Captain Price and Soap that began four years earlier. That autumn is the second pair.

Both series also owe a lot to one bold change. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) moved Call of Duty out of the Second World War and into the present day, and its online mode, with perks, killstreaks and levels to unlock, set the rules most shooters followed for years. Nearly a decade later Battlefield 1 (2016) went the other way, back to the First World War, with horses, biplanes and armoured trains. Each series' great reinvention meets the other in the third pair.

The old guard still holds its ground. Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and the first Black Ops (2010) are in the box too, so you can see how the newest games compare with the ones many players grew up on. Pick your side above, then see where shooters stand among Zelda, Mario and Minecraft in the Games Top 100, ranked by everyone.
