Atlético Madrid host Barcelona at the Metropolitano on Sunday 8 November, in the twelfth round of La Liga. Few fixtures in Spain have shared as many great players: some of the best forwards of the last twenty years wore both shirts. So instead of predicting the score, we asked a different question. Across the two clubs, who does the world think is greater? The box above shows how the votes split today.
The closest call is between the past and the future. Antoine Griezmann joined Atlético in 2014, left for Barcelona in 2019, came back two years later and became the club's all-time top scorer before leaving for Orlando City this summer. He won the World Cup with France in 2018. Lamine Yamal came through Barcelona's academy, won the European Championship with Spain in 2024 while still sixteen, and is already the face of the club. Put them side by side and the world splits almost down the middle, with Yamal just ahead at 51% to 49%.
Then there are two Spanish strikers with the same story told from opposite ends. Fernando Torres was Atlético's academy boy and their captain at 19, left to win everything with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spain, and came home to finish his career at the club he supported. David Villa, still Spain's all-time top scorer, scored for Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley and then moved to Atlético, where he won La Liga in 2014. The world can barely separate them: Torres 51%, Villa 49%.
And there is the man who decided a title for each side. Luis Suárez won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, scoring in the final, and formed one of the great attacking trios of the century with Lionel Messi and Neymar. Barcelona let him go in 2020, and a season later his goal at Valladolid on the final day won La Liga for Atlético. Against Griezmann, the world picks Suárez 59% to 41%.
The fixture has its own history too. On the last day of the 2013-14 season Atlético needed a point at Camp Nou to win the league, went a goal down, and drew level through a Diego Godín header to take the title from Barcelona on their own ground. Villa was in the Atlético side that day, a year after leaving Barcelona. Barcelona's answer to all of it is the man at the top of the list: Lionel Messi is the world's number one footballer, and no Atlético player has come close.
The world ranking of footballers is built from head-to-head picks, two players at a time, and it moves every day. If you think Griezmann deserves more than half, or that Villa should be above Torres, the vote is open before Sunday's kick-off.
