El Clásico: Mbappé or Lamine Yamal, who is the greater player?

Barcelona host Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October in the first league Clásico of the season. Every generation of this fixture has had its defining duel, and this one has an obvious pair: Kylian Mbappé, the finished superstar who finally moved to Madrid, against Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona academy winger who became a world star before he could legally drive. The box above shows how the world splits on them today.

Mbappé arrived at the top early too. At nineteen he won the 2018 World Cup with France and scored in the final against Croatia, the first teenager to do that in a World Cup final since Pelé. Four years later in Qatar he scored a hat-trick in the final against Argentina and still lost on penalties, one of the great individual performances in a losing side. At Paris Saint-Germain he became the club's all-time top scorer and won the French league again and again. In 2024 he joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, a move that had been expected for years, and in his first season he was top scorer in La Liga and won the European Golden Shoe.

Yamal's story is shorter and faster. He came through La Masia, Barcelona's academy, made his first-team debut at fifteen and became a starter at sixteen. At Euro 2024 he scored a stunning curling goal against France in the semi-final and won the tournament with Spain a day after his seventeenth birthday. The next season, under Hansi Flick, Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, and beat Real Madrid in all four Clásicos along the way, with Yamal at the centre of the attack. He finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or vote and won the Kopa Trophy for the best young player twice.

So the vote is a question of what greatness means. Mbappé has the bigger record: a World Cup, a World Cup final hat-trick and years of goals at the highest level. Yamal has the bigger promise, and the rare feeling that a teenager is already the most dangerous player on the pitch. Many voters will pick the career; others will pick the talent.

The rivalry has a long list of older face-offs too. Xavi against Luka Modrić is the midfield version: Xavi was the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and of the Spain team that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, while Modrić won six Champions League titles with Real Madrid and the 2018 Ballon d'Or. And the biggest argument of all started in the Clásico: Lionel Messi against Cristiano Ronaldo, who faced each other in this fixture for nine seasons. Vinícius Júnior, scorer of the winning goal in the 2022 Champions League final, is another Madrid name to put against Yamal.
