The new Street Fighter film reaches cinemas on Friday 16 October, with Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Jason Momoa as Blanka. A big-screen Ryu and Ken is the right moment for the oldest argument in any arcade: is Street Fighter II greater than Mortal Kombat? GOATvs asks everyone to pick one, and the box above shows how the world splits today. It is one of the closest fights in the whole video game list.

Street Fighter II came first. Capcom released it in arcades in 1991, and it turned a quiet genre into a craze. Eight world warriors, each with a country, a style and secret special moves, meant that every player had a favourite and a rival. The hadouken, the dragon punch and Guile's sonic boom became part of playground language, and the combo, two moves chained so fast the opponent cannot block, was a happy accident that the designers kept. The Super Nintendo version in 1992 brought the arcade home and sold millions.

Mortal Kombat answered a year later. Midway's game used digitised photos of real actors instead of drawn characters, which made it look like a film, and it added what Street Fighter never had: blood and the fatality, a finishing move that rewarded the winner with something shocking. That shock made it famous far beyond arcades. Its violence was debated in the United States Congress, and the debate led to the ESRB age ratings that still appear on every game box in North America.

So the vote is really about two ideas of a fighting game. Street Fighter is about precision: reading the other player, spacing, timing and a deep move list that tournaments still test. Mortal Kombat is about spectacle: a darker world, outrageous finishers and secrets that players traded like rumours. Picking Street Fighter II means picking the game that built competitive fighting; picking Mortal Kombat means picking the one that made everyone talk about games.

Neither series stopped there. Tekken 3 brought fighting into three dimensions on the PlayStation and is ranked above both classics in the world list, and Mortal Kombat 11 showed in 2019 that the series could tell a full cinematic story as well as shock. Fans of either side can also check where the others stand in the best action and adventure games list.

The film will decide whether Street Fighter finally gets the movie its fans wanted; Mortal Kombat has already had its own adaptations, from the 1995 cult film to the 2021 reboot. Real votes decide where the games stay. Pick Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat above, then try Tekken 3 against Street Fighter II, and the original Mortal Kombat against its modern heir.
